Halls for All aims to increase access to affordable housing for students
Why is this important?
Students should not have to be in complete destitution to have a roof over their heads.
Yet the household income threshold to receive housing support has not changed in 10 years. Since then, we have had six prime ministers, Brexit, a pandemic, and several wars, but the KAAS income threshold is still the same, despite far higher costs of living since it was set.
Meanwhile postgraduates are not eligible for the scheme at all, and disabled students are excluded from the priority group despite faciting the brunt of the cost of living crisis.
In comparison to Imperial, where the income threshold is £70k, it’s clear why KAAS is so inaccessible and undersubscribed.
Campaign Asks & Wins so Far
Conduct a full review of KAAS’s fitness for purpose.
-
WIN: KCL has committed to establishing a working group to review all affordable housing available to students, including KAAS! This would be the first KAAS review in 10 years!
-
WIN: The working group will be co-owned and co-led by both KCL and KCLSU.
Ensure the voices of postgrads and disabled students are represented in the review.
Raise the income threshold for the King’s Living Bursary in order to increase access to KAAS for low-income students.
