To fully pedestrianise the area of Strand within the movable bollards. Preventing the entry of vehicles into the area to keep students safe, building a safe environment for King’s Students and their learning.
Why does it matter?
On the 18th of March a tragic incident hit our University. A van, exiting from the Indian Embassy tragically hit and killed a King's student, injuring three others in an accidental crash on the pedestrianised area of the strand.
This incident is shocking, causing traumatic reactions for many students exiting and entering classes that day. Acting as a stark reminder of the fragility of life especially in an area where students ought to feel safe and secure. This heartbreaking event is all the more frustrating as a result of its preventability. Cars and deliveries to the Indian embassy and its surrounding buildings enjoy restricted access to the pedestrianised area with the existence of opening bollards that allow visitors with clearance into the area.
This creates a clear dissonance. Students, rightfully treat the area as pedestrianised, whilst cars treat it as a road. When these two opposing items interact, it acts as a catalyst for not just the events of the 18th of March but future events like it.
Campaign asks...
- Permanently close the opening bollards at each end of Strand
- Erect Fixed Bollards to fully pedestrianise the area
