4 Wholesome Winter Activities In London

It’s time to admit it: sunny days are past us now. London has been covered in a thick layer of clouds lately, and the weather has called for extra layers of warm tights and scarves. Luckily, there are thousands of festive celebrations happening all around the City, to ease into the winter months and cheer us up.

With the end of term approaching, you might also want to spend some time with your friends before the winter break. Look no further! We have compiled a list of four social activities for the winter, to make long-lasting memories and chase the bitter cold away:

1. Christmas Markets

What screams ‘festive’ more than a stroll around whimsically decorated Christmas stalls? Whether you’re gift-shopping for friends and family or just want to feel like you’re in a Hallmark movie, you are bound to find your dream spot in London, with the widest array of markets you can ever imagine. The most classic destinations are Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park, Borough Market and Covent Garden Christmas Markets. But if you’re looking for something a bit more unique and less crowded, opt for the Curated Makers Christmas Markets in Battersea, to support local businesses. For a proper small-town vibe, take a quick trip away from the centre and check out Wimbledon’s Christmas in the Village, to sink into the cosy and wholesome feeling of a more local market.

2. Ice rinks

Feeling a bit more adventurous and in the mood for a fun challenge? Then ice skating might be the perfect activity for you! If you’re looking for a memorable study break, the ice rink at Somerset House will be perfect for those of you located in Strand Campus. You will be skating (and occasionally falling down?) in one of the prettiest architectural spaces in the City, with a beautifully decorated Christmas Tree to get you straight into the festive mood. If you’re not in the area but you enjoy a similar view, we also recommend the rink in Hampton Court Palace, tucked into a picture-perfect Tudor-style spot.

3. Movie Marathons

Sometimes it’s just too cold to take part in any open-air activity. Luckily, cinemas have got us covered... Literally. For a single watch or a full-on marathon, cinemas around London have prepared a festive program with both nostalgic and new winter holiday movies. Taking a break from the library has never been so easy! The Prince Charles Cinema has Christmas movies lined up from early afternoon until late evening and of every possibly conceivable genre: thrillers, action, a dramedy... Honourable mention: our favourite LGBTQ+ classic, Carol, on December 21st. For a bit of a secret gem, head to the One Aldwych Hotel: their cosy “hidden” cinema, hosting 30 seats only, runs a special Film and Fizz programme with Christmas movies all around December.

4. Christmas Lights

For a memorable moment ‘on the go’, why not check out how they’ve decorated the streets of London with warm strings of lights and all kinds of hanging sculptures? This is an easy way to enjoy the festive mood without having to spend any money! Our favourite displays around Central London are in Regent Street: you will be enchanted by the beautifully lit decorations, and you will be able to enjoy London from a completely new and magical perspective! If you prefer a change of scenery, you can admire the spectacle of Christmas lights at Battersea Power Station, for a less crowded (but definitely not understated!) experience.

We hope you like these suggestions, and that you can use them as a way to take some time off from your studies. Preparation for exams and deadlines can be quite stressful, and you might feel the need to drift away from the tension and find moments of rest. These activities can be enjoyed both with a group of friends or in private, to reconnect with yourself and find small moments of joy!
