If you thought that celebrations were over in the UK after the winter break, we have great news for you! We’re all looking forward to celebrating Chinese New Year, which marks the beginning of the year according to the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar.
London’s multicultural appeal makes it the perfect place to join in the festivities! It is a magical experience, filled with vibrant traditions, cultural events, and delicious food.
But if this is the first time you’ve heard about it, and you want to make sure you’re not missing out on anything, here’s a fun checklist of five things to do around the City, to have a perfect start to the Year of the Snake!
1. Watch the Parade in Trafalgar Square
No Chinese New Year celebration in London is complete without the famous parade through the West End. On February 2nd, head to Trafalgar Square to witness a lively procession filled with lion dancers, drummers, and vibrant performances that reflect Chinese traditions. Make sure to arrive early to grab a good spot, as it’s one of the most popular events of the season.
The whole area will be alive with music, performances, and a genuine sense of celebration, so it’s the perfect way to dive straight into the atmosphere of the festival. To find out more about the parade, go to this link to know what you can expect!
2. Treat yourself to some delicious Chinese cuisine
While you’re in Chinatown, you should check out the many bars and restaurants of the area! Many of these will have a special menu to commemorate the Chinese New Year, so you can have a taste of modern twists on traditional Chinese dishes.
If Chinatown is a bit too crowded for your taste, we recommend taking a short walk to East London, where you’ll find some incredible options. KCL students recommend Yeye London, with affordable prices and top-tier dumplings, and Bun House Disco near Brick Lane, to enjoy great food in a 1980s decor setting!
3. Enjoy a Classical Evening Concert by Shirley Ly
If you're into a calmer, but still celebrative mood, why not take in a classical evening concert? On Saturday, February 1st at 7 PM in Sussex Gardens, music composer Shirley Ly will be hosting a highly anticipated performance.
It’s a wonderful way to appreciate Chinese New Year away from the crowds, through the lens of music and artistry. If this description strikes your fancy and you’d like to book your seat, go check out the event on Eventbrite.
4. Discover Lantern-Making at Dear Asia Algate Centre
The Lantern Festival is another key part of Chinese New Year, and it’s a tradition that deserves your attention. On Thursday, February 13th at 6 PM, head to the Dear Asia Aldgate Centre for a Lantern-Making Workshop. This hands-on event will teach you how to craft your very own traditional Chinese lantern, a symbol of good luck and hope for the year ahead.
Making your own lantern, both on your own or with friends, gives you a beautiful memento to take home and hang up as part of your own celebrations. Tickets are available here, and it’s definitely an event you won’t want to miss.
5. Join the Lunar New Year Celebration with ESEA Authors
For those who enjoy literature and storytelling, the ESEA Authors Lunar New Year celebration on February 3rd at 6 PM offers the perfect opportunity to explore Asian culture through words. This event will feature an evening of readings and discussions with authors from East and Southeast Asia.
It’s an ideal way to engage with the literary traditions of different cultures while reflecting on the themes of renewal and hope that are central to the Chinese New Year. You can learn more about it through this link.
We hope this guide has given you everything you need to plan the most perfect Chinese New Year celebrations! Mark your calendar, and get ready for an unforgettable experience as you welcome the Year of the Snake in London!
