A Student's Guide to Public Transport

Navigating London: A Student's Guide to Public Transport

London can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially for students new to the city.  With a bit of planning and knowledge of the city's public transport system, it is very easy to navigate your way around. Here’s a short guide to point you in the right direction...

The Tube: The Underground Network

The Tube, or the London Underground, is undoubtedly the fastest way to get around the city. However, it can get quite crowded during peak hours, so be prepared. To avoid peak fares, try to travel outside of the rush hour, which is typically between 6:30 AM and 9:30 AM and 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM (more details about peak hours are available on this website). Don’t forget, most Tube lines stop running between midnight and around 5 AM, so plan your journeys accordingly.

To pay for your Tube rides, you can use tickets, a contactless credit card, or an Oyster Card. As a student, we recommend that you buy an 18+ Student Oyster Photocard, which offers savings of 30% on adult-rate Travelcards and Bus & Tram Pass season tickets.

Buses: A Convenient and Affordable Option

Buses are another great way to explore London. From as little as £1.65 a day, you can enjoy a vast network of routes that are both convenient and affordable, especially with the hopper fare, which allows you to make unlimited journeys within one hour for a fixed price.

Cycling: A Healthier and More Eco-Friendly Option

London is a cycle-friendly city, and cycling is a great way to explore the city at your own pace. You can use your own bike or rent a Santander Cycle from as little as £1.65 a day or get 25% off a yearly membership to explore the city. These cycling routes and maps will help guide you around. There are also several other bike-sharing services available, such as Lime and Forest bikes. Top tip: Forest bikes offer the first 10 minutes of every ride for free.

Helpful Apps

To make your commute smoother, consider downloading the Citymapper or TfL Go app. These apps provide real-time updates on Tube lines, bus routes, and other transport options. They can also help you plan your journey, find accessible routes, and stay informed about any disruptions. Google Maps and Apple Maps are also great alternatives that provide pricing information and alternate routes. For bus routes, check out the Bus Times app for accurate bus times near your location.
