Named the saddest day in the year, Blue Monday is usually the third Monday of January. It is important to remember that Blue Monday is not based on actual scientific research – the original press release by Sky Travel promoted the day in the hopes of selling holiday packages!
However, following the Christmas and New Year’s festivities, life quickly returns to normal. This can be hard to cope with for some people. We would like to take this opportunity to recognise many of the support systems we have at KCLSU to help guide you through the new year.
Wellbeing at KCLSU
KCLSU's Advice & Wellbeing team is always here to assist you, whether you need help with academic appeals, well-being activities, or just someone to talk to. You can find more information and get in touch here.
Wellbeing Hub
The Wellbeing Hub at KCLSU is your go-to destination for activities, events, and resources designed to boost your well-being. Whether you're looking for stress-relief activities, mental health resources, or simply a community to engage with, the Well-Being Hub has something for everyone. Be sure to check out their calendar of events and explore the wealth of resources which are aimed at supporting your mental and physical health throughout your time at KCL.
The well-being Hub also hosts the PGR Wellbeing Hub, which is here to help you locate these resources and services available to King's postgraduate researchers (PGRs) and the supervisors and staff who support them while at King's.
Time Out Tuesdays and Thursdays
KCLSU and King's have collaborated to launch Time Out Tuesdays and Time Out Thursdays. Each week during term time, there will be a designated time on each campus where you can speak to someone to help you explore wellbeing options available to you.
These sessions will allow you to speak to a Team Member, a and fellow King's students (our Student Wellbeing Ambassadors). You can also spend some time switching off from your studies and trying out a new activity each week.

Prioritise Your Physical Wellbeing
Starting university is exciting, but it’s easy to neglect your physical health amidst the thrill. Freshers' flu is common due to hectic schedules and new social interactions. To avoid falling ill, focus on having balanced meals, staying hydrated, and aiming for eight hours of sleep each night. This will keep both your body and mind in top shape, allowing you to fully enjoy your first term.
Stay Connected
Living in halls can be lonely if you isolate yourself. Make an effort to connect with your flatmates, coursemates, and others you meet. Even casual conversations can help you feel more connected and less isolated. If you’re not in the mood to talk, simply getting out for a walk or a solo dinner can lift your spirits.
Mind Your Alcohol Consumption
Be mindful of your drinking habits and balance them with a healthy lifestyle. You don’t need alcohol to have fun; taking nights off to relax is important. Getting involved in societies and clubs can also support your mental health. Find activities you enjoy to relieve stress and meet new people.
King’s Support Services
King’s College London also offers various mental health support options:
All these teams are made up of caring, professional people who work with students daily. They’ll usually understand your situation and can help you choose the best support.
Getting support is a personal decision, and it might take time to feel comfortable asking for help. You can contact any of these services to find out how they can work with you.
