Celebrating Eid at King’s: marking the end of Ramadan with joy & togetherness

Eid-al-Fitr, the festival of breaking the fast, marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting observed by Muslims worldwide. It's a time of spiritual reflection, gratitude, and joyous celebration.

As Ramadan draws to a close, Eid-al-Fitr, a time of joy, abundance and community, is celebrated. Families and friends gather to attend special prayers at mosques and share festive meals together. It is a time for people to celebrate the blessings of Ramadan and the renewal of faith.

What is Eid al-Fitr & Why is it Celebrated?

Eid al-Fitr, also known as the Festival of Breaking the Fast, marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting in Islam. After 30 days of self-discipline, charity, and prayer, Eid is a time for gratitude, giving, and celebration. The festival is based on the Islamic lunar calendar, so its exact date varies each year, but it is always on the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar.

What makes Eid special?

  • Morning prayers (Eid Salah): Muslims gather in mosques or open spaces for a special prayer, starting the day with gratitude.
  • Charity (Zakat al-Fitr): Giving to those in need is an essential part of Eid, ensuring that everyone can partake in the celebrations.
  • Feasting & Family Gatherings: After a month of fasting, delicious food takes center stage! Traditional dishes vary across cultures, from biryani and samosas to baklava and maamoul.
  • Gifts & New Clothes: Many people wear new or traditional outfits, exchange gifts (known as Eidi), and visit loved ones.
  • Festivities & Community Events: From Eid markets to fairs, the celebration extends beyond homes and into the streets of London!

You can also reach out to them if you have any questions about the celebration and want to learn more.
