What happens if I fail the assessment?
KCLSU Advice is completely separate from King’s. We offer free, impartial and confidential advice to all students at King’s on issues affecting their studies. This includes students who have failed an assessment or may be worried about failing.
Here are our top tips for things to do if you find that you fail an assessment, just in case.

Don’t Panic
We know it can be really stressful and upsetting if you find out you failed an assessment. The important thing to remember is that it is unlikely you need to do anything immediately. You have time to understand your options.
Contact KCLSU Advice
KCLSU Advice is separate from King’s and offers confidential, free and impartial advice on topics affecting your studies. If you’re confused about your options or would like to appeal, fill out the KCLSU Advice contact form here. We can explain your options and help you navigate any relevant KCL procedures.

Contact Your Faculty
Reach out to your faculty to understand what your options are. In many situations, you may be eligible for another attempt. Some assessments also qualify for compensation or condonement which means you can continue without having to take the assessment again. This is quite faculty and department specific which is why it’s important to reach out in the first instance. You can find contact information here or check your student handbook.
Appeal Options
If offered a second attempt, the grade might be capped. To request the cap be removed, you can appeal within 21 calendar days of the publication of the results of your first attempt. Do not wait until the capped results have been published – you must appeal the results of your first attempt at the exam to request your second attempt be uncapped. Check out KCLSU Advice’s Academic Appeals guidance to see if you have grounds to appeal.

Check your Circumstances
Failing an assessment can occasionally have an impact on your funding or visa options. Check out this SSO article to see if this might apply to you and reach out to Money & Housing team or the Visa team for support.
Get Support
It’s important to remember to look after yourself during stressful situations. You can explore support options available at King’s here which include Faculty Wellbeing Advisors and King’s Counselling.
