On 25 November, we marked The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women: a day to pause, reflect, renew commitments, amplify voices, and strategies to achieve the goal of eliminating violence against women by 2030. This day also ushers in the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, an annual international campaign running from 25 November to 10 December, which is Human Rights Day.
Now we have arrived at Human Rights Day - observed annually on 10 December and marks the anniversary of one of the most significant global commitments ever made: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This document, adopted by the UN in 1948, enshrines the fundamental rights that every individual is entitled to, regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political beliefs, nationality, social origin, property, birth, or any other status. The UDHR was the first document to articulate universal human rights, setting out principles that are to be safeguarded worldwide.
The UDHR serves as a foundation for international, national, and local laws and policies. It also underpins the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, emphasising its enduring relevance in building a fairer world. Remarkably, the UDHR has been translated into 577 languages, from Abkhaz to Zulu, making it the most translated document globally.
This year's theme: Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now.
This year’s theme is a call to acknowledge the importance and relevance of human rights in our everyday lives. We have an opportunity to change perceptions by speaking up against hate speech, correcting misinformation and countering disinformation.
Why do we mark International Days?
International days and weeks are occasions to educate the public on issues of concern, mobilize political will and resources to address global problems and to celebrate and reinforce the achievements of humanity. At KCLSU, we believe that these days should be embraced as a powerful advocacy tool.
What can we do to support this day and what it stands for?
