LGBTQ+ History Month is here again! This February, we embark on a celebration of diversity, resilience, and the profound history of the LGBTQ+ community. This month is more than a commemoration; it’s a recognition of the struggles, triumphs, and the ongoing journey toward equality and acceptance
Origins
LGBTQ+ History Month traces its roots to Rodney Wilson, a history teacher from Missouri. In the UK, the celebration took place for the first time in 2005, thanks to the efforts of Schools OUT, a charity dedicated to creating safe spaces for LGBTQ+ students. The abolition of Section 28 – a document that had prevented local authorities from teaching about homosexuality or promoting its acceptance, motivated the first celebration of LGBTQ+ History Month.
This year’s theme
KCLSU celebrates LGBTQ+ History month together with the LGBTQ+ Student Network. Our theme for 2024, ‘Under the Scope’, signifies a commitment to spotlighting the diverse voices and narratives historically marginalised within the LGBTQ+ spectrum. This year, we focus on shedding light on the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in various workplaces. It’s a poignant reminder of the ongoing work needed to ensure inclusivity and understanding.
How to Get Involved?
Join us in creating a space to unite, educate, and empower our diverse community. Throughout February, engage in a variety of events to connect with fellow students, learn about LGBTQ+ history, and celebrate accomplishments.
