April is not just about blooming flowers and longer days; it’s also Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to prioritise self-care and wellbeing. For students at King’s, this period can be particularly overwhelming, with deadlines looming and exams on the horizon. This is your reminder that your mental health matters just as much as your academic success.
Understanding Stress: A Normal Response, Not a Weakness
Stress is a natural reaction to pressure, uncertainty, or high expectations. It’s completely normal to feel anxious during exam season or when juggling assignments. In fact, some stress can be helpful, motivating you to stay focused and perform at your best. However, when stress becomes overwhelming or persistent, it can take a toll on your wellbeing. Recognising when stress is becoming unmanageable is the first step toward looking after yourself.
Practical Ways to Manage Stress
If you’re feeling the pressure, here are some simple yet effective strategies to maintain balance and keep stress in check:
- Establish a Routine – Structure your day with dedicated study time, regular breaks, and downtime.
- Move Your Body – Exercise, even a short walk, helps clear your mind and improve concentration.
- Stay Hydrated and Eat Well – Your brain needs proper fuel to function efficiently.
- Prioritise Sleep – Lack of rest can heighten stress levels and reduce focus.
- Use the Pomodoro Technique – Study in 25-minute intervals followed by short breaks to stay productive without burning out.
- Practice Mindfulness – Deep breathing, meditation, or simply pausing for a moment can reduce anxiety.
- Talk to Someone – Don’t keep your worries bottled up; sharing your feelings can be incredibly relieving.
