As a student, you will get loads of ideas about how to connect with your peers or enhance your CV. When Sakeena and Amy started out, they were also thinking about how to put these thoughts into action. That’s why they have joined the Student Union’s Volunteering Team, and today their experiences can help you find out how to get involved in volunteering projects!
How to run your own project
If your interests include student participation and education, your guide is Sakeena Amla, our Volunteering and Widening Participation Coordinator. She is passionate about supporting student groups to run projects involving young students (under 18). Her work is also really impactful in widening access to education, especially for individuals who come from an underprivileged background.
Don’t worry, you don’t need to have a detailed plan on how to become a volunteer: you just need the passion! Sakeena will help you find the resources you need to start your own project, like the Safeguarding Training and DBS checks, to start making a real difference!

How to sort out finances
Of course, you’ll need access to funding to turn all your ideas into tangible projects. If you’re not sure about how to make a financial plan for your initiatives, Amy Garfield will be your point of contact. She is the Volunteering and Fundraising Coordinator and extremely knowledgeable on all things fundraising!
Everything needs a logistics plan, from raising money for a charity to a fundraising event, or even a bake sale. Amy will give you all the advice you need to create a successful plan and to make sure it runs smoothly. With her help, you’re sure to see your ideas come to life!
At KCLSU, we believe volunteering can be a life-changing experience, both for you and for the people you support. Sakeena and Amy are here to support you in setting up your volunteering project just like you imagined it.
