Moving to London as an International Student: a Guide

Moving to London as an international student can be daunting, but it promises to be an exciting adventure. Here are some tips and advice to make your transition to King’s College London and life in the city as smooth as possible.

Pre-departure Prep

Ensure your visa is in order

Visas can be confusing, so familiarise yourself with the terms of your visa before you arrive. Have all the necessary documents ready to avoid any surprises at the border. More information about student visas can be found on the UK Government website.

Research accommodation options

King’s offers a range of accommodations, and private housing is also an option. If considering private accommodation, view the property beforehand to check for any inconsistencies with the advertisement. Don’t forget you can send your proposed contract to the KCL Advice team for review.

After arriving in London

Open a UK bank account

Having a UK bank account is important—while you can get by in the short term without one, it will make life much easier if you open one soon after arriving. Rent is generally paid out of UK bank accounts, and employers usually prefer to pay your income into one. It also simplifies money transfers and helps you avoid unnecessary fees. To set up, you’ll likely need proof of a UK address and a letter confirming your student status. Obtain a confirmation of study letter specifically for opening a bank account from Student Records.

Get a British SIM Card

While it might be possible to continue using your old phone number, it may be easier in the long run to get a UK SIM. Many cheap, student-friendly phone plans like VOXI, Lebara and giffgaff are available, and you can find plans without a contract, allowing you to switch or pause your plan when you travel home without hassle.

Apply for a National Insurance Number

National Insurance numbers are used to calculate and pay taxes. While this might not be needed immediately, it will come in handy if you want to work in the UK. Applications can take a while to process, so it’s best to start early. Applying is straightforward, and more information can be found on the UK Government website.

Get a Railcard

There’s a good chance you’ll be taking the tube regularly, especially if commuting to campus. A Railcard for people aged 16 to 25 costs £30 per year and will save, on average, £159 per year on train fares in the UK. It also offers cheaper travel on the London Underground. Get an Oyster card at stations and ask staff to link it to your Railcard, allowing for savings on off-peak travel. It’s a great way to save money if travelling regularly around the UK, essentially paying for itself.

Don't bring too many electronics (and don't pack too much!)

While adapter plugs can be used, UK outlets are different, and items from home like kettles and curling irons might not work properly. This will also save you from packing too many bulky items. Remember that things like cookware and bedding can be purchased once you arrive in London. Packing light will make moving in much easier.

Embrace the Culture

Be prepared for a wide range of cultural encounters. From red double-decker buses to iconic phone booths, the London Underground will soon become your best friend, connecting you to the city’s famous landmarks, art galleries, museums, parks, and restaurants.

Activity groups and sports clubs

KCLSU has over 300 societies and 80 sports clubs, offering something for everyone. Whether you’re into cricket or Formula 1, there’s a society for you. Joining clubs and societies helps meet like-minded individuals and build a supportive community. Take a look at our guide to student groups here.

Know When to Seek Support

Remember that no one expects you to have all the answers from day one. There are many people available for advice if you encounter problems. KCLSU offers a wide range of support services, including academic guidance, counselling, and housing assistance. Don’t hesitate to reach out if facing challenges—professionals and peers are ready to help navigate any obstacles.

Moving to London as an international student is not just about academics but also about crafting a unique chapter in your life story. Have fun and cherish the time spent exploring this diverse city. Your experiences will shape your academic journey at King’s and contribute to lifelong memories carried beyond your time at King’s. London is an incredible city, and remember, home is never far away with an Indian restaurant or German bar nearby!

Good luck, and feel free to reach out through the Students’ Union for additional support. Congratulations on your acceptance to King’s - we can’t wait to welcome you to London!
