Please find below a response from the KCLSU Governance team in response to a number of emails KCLSU has received in reference to the KCLSU 2024 Presidential Election and the Board of Trustees decision to proceed without a President for the 2024/25 academic year.
Dear Members
We are aware of various posts and content on social media on this matter which, unfortunately, are materially inaccurate.
We can confirm that a confidential HR matter took place, which was conducted in accordance with due process, including appropriate oversight by the board of trustees and staff in accordance with KCLSU’s governing documents and scheme of delegation.
Following this process, Hassan Ali was determined to have breached the Trustee Code of Conduct. On this basis, and in accordance with KCLSU’s constitutional documents, the independent Returning Officer (appointed jointly by King’s College and KCLSU), who is responsible for running KCLSU’s elections, determined that he was ineligible to take up the position of President – and consequently he has not taken up this role. For the avoidance of doubt, KCLSU’s Chief Executive was not involved in this decision.
Some of the social media reporting has carried allegations of undemocratic behaviour, discrimination and Islamophobia. We take these allegations very seriously. However, it is important to understand that the claims made online are unfounded. KCLSU remains committed to fostering an inclusive and respectful environment for all students.
We understand that there are ongoing questions about the outcome of the election and the next steps. We will provide an update on the website for members, as soon as more information is available. In the meantime, please refer to the statement issued on 10 July 2024 for key principles and context.
Regards
KCLSU Governance Department
