In the fast-paced journey of university life, it's easy to overlook the significance of mental health. 14 March marks University Mental Health Day, bringing together the university community to make mental health a university-wide priority and create ongoing year-round change to the future of student mental health.
Embarking on the university journey is both thrilling and demanding for numerous students. Amidst the hustle and bustle of university life, it's easy for students to become immersed in the fast-paced environment. Balancing academic aspirations, social engagements, and financial concerns can significantly impact our mental wellbeing. Studies indicate that approximately one in four students encounters mental health challenges during their time at university.
If you are a student grappling with mental health issues, it's crucial to recognise that you're not alone; support is readily available. Seeking assistance is a testament to resilience, and there is no shame in reaching out for help when needed. Read below some ideas for ways to support your mental health this University Mental Health Day:
Acknowledge the Challenges of University
University life is exhilarating, but it comes with its own set of challenges. From academic pressures to adjusting to a new environment, students face various stressors that can impact mental health. Recognising these challenges is the first step in fostering a supportive community.
Open Conversations
Breaking the stigma surrounding mental health starts with open conversations. Campus Conversations encourages students to share their experiences in a safe space, such as in a 121 chat with an ambassador, or the weekly What’s on Wednesday and Time out Tuesday sessions. You can also meet with your Faculty Wellbeing Advisors, KCLSU Advice, and King’s Sport and Wellness at these sessions. They are a great chance to take some time out and relax with whatever activity is on offer that week too! Find out more here.
Access Support Services
Being able to access support services for mental health is incredibly important, whether that be through counselling, workshops, or peer support. You can visit the Wellbeing hub to find out more about support services, and other ways to take care of your wellbeing.
Promote Self-Care
Self-care is not a luxury but a necessity. Encourage fellow students to prioritize their wellbeing through small acts of self-love. Whether it's taking breaks between study sessions, practicing mindfulness, or engaging in hobbies, these habits contribute to a healthier state of mind. You can read more about self-care tips here:
Build a Supportive Community
At university, we thrive as a community. On University Mental Health Day, let's strengthen our bonds by supporting one another. A simple act of kindness, a listening ear, or offering help to someone in need can make a significant impact on mental wellbeing.
Raise Awareness
Education is key to understanding mental health better. Raising awareness of mental health issues, dispelling myths, and promoting a more compassionate and informed campus community are crucial. Knowledge empowers us to support each other effectively.
As we embrace University Mental Health Day at KCLSU, let's collectively work towards creating an environment where every student feels valued, supported, and able to thrive academically and personally. Together, we can nurture our minds and build a resilient community that understands the importance of mental wellbeing in the journey of higher education.
